The Milestones & Events page shows important dates in your plan on a single chronological view. It combines two kinds of entries:
- Milestones - read-only entries the planner derives from your existing inputs. Retirement age, Social Security claim, Medicare enrollment, pension start, RMD onset, plan end, real-estate purchase or sale, debt payoff, ACA coverage window - anything date-bound in the plan shows up automatically. Click a milestone card and you jump to the input page where it's defined.
- Events - dates you add yourself. Two kinds today:
- Custom Event - a user-named date marker (e.g. "House paid off", "Daughter graduates"). Useful for noting personal milestones, and they can be selected as the anchor date for one-time expenses, windfalls, and recurring-expense start/end ages (see Anchoring inputs to a Custom Event below).
- Relocation Event - the existing state-of-residence change. Pick a year and a new state, and the engine switches state-tax treatment starting January 1 of the move year. Add multiple relocations to model a more complex pattern. Relocation Events are also anchorable from the expense / windfall pages, the same way Custom Events are.
Each row carries a badge that names what it is at a glance: Milestone, Event, or Relocation.
Show / hide filters
Two checkboxes under the page intro let you trim the view:
- Show milestones toggles the planner-generated rows.
- Show events toggles your user-created rows (Custom Events and Relocation Events).
Milestones you'll see
The full list depends on what you've configured, but the planner can surface:
- Your retirement (and your spouse's, in couple plans)
- Social Security claim (you and spouse)
- Social Security cut window (if you enabled a What-If cut)
- Pension start and pension lump sum (per source)
- Roth conversion window start and end
- ACA Marketplace coverage start and end
- Medicare enrollment (you and spouse)
- Long-Term Care window start and end (you and spouse)
- Required Minimum Distribution onset (you and spouse)
- Debt payoff for each debt
- Real-estate purchase or sale events
- Plan-to age (you and spouse)
None of these need to be added manually - they appear as soon as the underlying input is configured. If a milestone you expected isn't showing, the corresponding input is probably blank or set outside the plan window.
Adding a Custom Event
Click Add Event and leave the type picker on Custom Event (the default). Fields:
- Event name - required; up to 120 characters. Shown verbatim in the row title.
- Year - required; must be within your plan's year range.
- Note - optional free-text reminder; up to 500 characters.
Anchoring inputs to an Event
Custom Events (and Relocation Events) can serve as the anchor date for several plan inputs. Instead of typing a fixed age, you pick the event from the same dropdown and the engine fires the row in whichever year the event lives. Move the event year later and the anchored inputs slide with it - no need to hunt down every row that referenced the old date.
Pages that accept an event anchor today:
- One-Time Expenses - the Age column lists your active events alongside the explicit ages. Anchoring a kitchen-remodel expense to "House sold" keeps the cash flow in sync if you reschedule the sale.
- Windfalls - same picker on the Age column. Useful for "Sell house" or "Inheritance" rows that should track a Relocation or Custom Event.
- Recurring Expenses - From Age and To Age both accept events. Anchor a survivor-only expense's start to "Spouse passes" or a temporary cost's end to "Mortgage paid".
- Work & Other Income - earned and passive income rows accept events on both From age and To age. Anchor a side-consulting row's start to "Retirement" or a rental's end to "Sell rental property".
If the underlying event is later excluded or deleted, the anchored row falls back to whatever numeric age it carried before, so a stranded reference never silently drops the row from the projection - you'll just see the row labelled (missing event) until you pick a live anchor or a fixed age.
Adding a Relocation Event
Click Add Event and flip the type picker to Relocation Event. Pick the year of the move and the destination state. The planner will:
- Apply the new state's tax brackets to ordinary income starting January 1 of that year.
- Continue to use your prior state's brackets for every year before the move.
- Adjust the state-tax line in the year-by-year projection accordingly.
Local / city / county taxes are not modeled separately - see State taxes for the workaround if your destination has meaningful local taxes.
Editing, excluding, and deleting
User-created events (both Custom and Relocation) get an edit/exclude/delete row of controls:
- Click the row itself to edit.
- Click the eye icon to exclude the event from the projection without losing the details - it stays in the list, dimmed, with an "Excluded" badge. Click again to re-enable.
- Click the trash icon to delete permanently.
Event type is locked after creation: editing a Relocation Event stays a Relocation Event, and the same for Custom Event. To switch types, delete the original and add a new one.
Quick navigation
Clicking a milestone card jumps directly to the input page that produced it - so the Milestones & Events page doubles as a "find the page that controls this milestone" shortcut. User-created events open their edit modal instead.
