The Year-by-Year Details view is the row-per-year ledger of your plan. Every row is one calendar year; columns show ages, income, spending, account balances, withdrawals, and taxes for that year. It's the place to go when a chart raised a question and you want to see the actual numbers - "what does that step-up in age 70 income look like in dollars?", "how much is the portfolio drawing in 2034?", "when do RMDs start contributing materially?".
Data shown is a single coherent simulated lifetime drawn from the Monte Carlo run - the same numbers behind the Dashboard and Cash Flow charts, expressed in tabular form. See Median outcome vs. representative sample for why the table's final balance won't necessarily equal the Median Outcome tile on the Monte Carlo Simulator tab.
Column groups
A row of checkboxes above the table toggles which column groups are visible:
- Show inflows - total inflows for the year.
- Show outflows - total outflows and the year's net flow.
- Show accounts - each account's balance at year end.
- Show details - the breakdown: income by source (including employer match and Roth conversions) under inflows, spending, taxes and debts by category under outflows, plus the filing status, whether the year took the standard deduction or itemized, the year's RMD and the tax on it, and dividend distributions.
Export
Two export buttons sit next to the toggles:
- Copy to clipboard - copies the visible columns as tab-separated values. Paste straight into Excel, Google Sheets, or Numbers.
- Download CSV - downloads the same data as a .csv file. Useful for sharing with an advisor or archiving a snapshot of the plan.
Both exports respect your current column visibility - the file contains exactly the columns you have shown, in the same order.
Reading the table
- Year and age columns are anchors. For couple plans, both ages are shown.
- Inflows and outflows always reconcile to portfolio withdrawals: total spending minus total income equals the year's net withdrawal.
- Account balances are end-of-year balances. The change from one year to the next is what was withdrawn (or contributed, in pre-retirement years) plus that year's growth.
- Taxes show what was actually owed for that year given all income and conversions. Roth conversion years show the conversion amount in inflows and the higher tax bill in outflows.
- Totals row. The bottom row sums the per-year flow columns (income, spending, withdrawals, taxes) into lifetime totals. Balance columns are left blank there, since adding up end-of-year balances wouldn't mean anything.
