Planning means moving back and forth between the page where you change something and the page that shows what the change did. With two monitors you can keep both in view: your results in one window, the plan you are working on in the other. Or put two parts of your plan side by side, such as your accounts beside your expenses. This is a Plus feature.
Opening a second window
Click the monitor button at the right of the top bar, beside the icon that shows where your plan is stored. It opens the dashboard in a window of its own, which you can drag to your other screen and move to any page you like: another results page such as Projections, Insights or the Time Machine, or any page of your plan. Clicking the button again brings that window back to the front rather than opening another one.
You do not have to use the button. Any windows or tabs you open on the planner in the same browser stay in step the same way.
What stays in step
- Your edits. Change something in one window and the others pick it up as soon as it saves, about a second after you stop typing. Their results recalculate straight away when Auto refresh is on, as it normally is; with it off they show that the data has changed, and you refresh them yourself.
- The simulation itself. When one window recalculates, the others run the same draw of market returns, so every window shows the same results, even with the fixed seed turned off. Refresh the simulation in one window for a fresh draw and the others refresh with it.
- The plan you are on. Switch plans in one window and the others switch with it, including to a plan you have just created.
- Your list of plans. Rename, reorder, archive, restore or delete a plan, or choose a new Main plan, and the other windows show the change. If a window was showing the plan you archived or deleted, it moves to another of your plans, and any change it had not yet saved is discarded, since the plan it belonged to is gone.
- Demo mode. Turn the demo on or off in one window and the others follow, and picking a different sample plan in the demo switches them too. Any change you had not yet saved in another window is saved before it switches.
What-If Explorer scenarios are saved with the plan, so they stay in step too: set up a stress test in one window and the other shows the same scenarios, on the same tab.
Each window keeps its own place otherwise: the page it is on and the charts and views you picked there.
Editing in both windows
Every window can edit the plan, and each save carries the whole plan. If you change something in both windows within a second or so of each other, the save that lands last wins and the other change is lost. In practice, edit in one window and watch in the other.
What it does not cover
It works between windows of the same browser on the same computer, for plans stored in your browser and plans synced to the cloud alike. A different browser, or another device such as your phone, does not follow along; it shows your latest changes the next time it loads the plan.
